Meet Mckenzie
Certified End-of-Life Specialist and Death Doula
I was trained as an end-of-life doula through the International End of Life Doula Association (INELDA). I have also been certified as a Certified End-of-Life Specialist through the organization Doing Death Differently. Prior to becoming an end-of-life doula, I worked as a hospice nurse for nearly ten years while pursuing my Masters degree in nursing. After losing the two most important people in my life within a period of six months, I decided it was time for a career change. I knew I was being called to serve the dying and their friends and family.
As an end-of-life doula, I provide holistic support to the dying person and their family. My focus is on the heart and is practical. I provide physical, emotional, and spiritual support at the end of the life cycle. I also provide education, planning, and preparation for end-of-life. Doulas are companions and guides through the unknown, often chaotic territory of death and dying. I operate in a non-medical manner, in that I do not participate in the healthcare plan. I am a compliment to physicians, nurses and other members of the healthcare team.
My Story
I have always been passionate about death and dying and feel that being an end-of-life doula is a calling. I am a mother of three boys. My oldest son's dad died when he was six years old. My husband and the father of my younger two boys was killed by a drunk driver when my boys were two years old and five years old. Six months later I lost my dad. Having lost the two most important men in my life, in such a short period of time, created extreme grief and a re-evaluation of my life. I left my career as a nurse practitioner and decided to pursue the calling to become an end-of-life doula. I had worked as a nurse in hospice all through graduate school so I already had a passion within me for those patients nearing the end-of-life.
In 2022, I experienced death myself. I was diagnosed with pneumonia and when hospitalized, the staff at the hospital punctured my lung during suctioning which caused me to die. I actually died three different times and was successfully resuscitated. After waking up from the coma I had been in for nearly a month, I was complimented on the extensive living will I had in place and the fact that there was no room for error or questions when it came down to my wishes. I feel that this kind of information is important for everyone t know, not just those who are close to death. When one has experienced death, the things one thought were once so important, are not so important any longer. Priorities shift. I hope to help those facing death and their family evaluate and appreciate the things that are important to each individual.
While I have extensive knowledge in advance directive planning and grief counseling, my services extend beyond those two things. Please take a look at my Mission and Values page, as well as my Why Choose a Doula page to determine if you or your family may benefit from my services.
